React to Difficulties
In life you will constantly be facing challenges, times when it’s tough to feel confident about what will happen in the future. Times like these will have different degrees of intensity and duration. The greater the degree and the longer the duration, the greater the fear and sense of uncertainty will be.
As many of you know, the economy seems to be in a downward spiral right now. Today alone, trillions of dollars are being wiped out in a matter of days. People’s retirement funds are being cut in double digit percentages. Many are facing job losses in a time when they need income the most. In times like these,it’s a real challenge to have any optimism and confidence that things are going to be better in the near future.
I read an article where a financial expert stated if he went all in with his money today, he’ll be better off six months from today since markets will always rebound, but added he will have many restless nights and will be constantly wondering "what if this time it’s different?"
It’s sometimes difficult to stay positive and motivated to work on your goals especially when all around you there are people so pessimistic about, well, everything in general. People are cutting back on everything. Conversations around the dinner table and water cooler are increasingly about the state of the economy.
Ok, enough negative talk. If you notice, you have some people reacting negatively while others are acting positively. Here’s what makes the difference. You get what you focus on. You can either think about how bad you have it and feel like a victim,or you can use these challenges as a reason to step up and grow from them.
Yes, things look like economy will get worse. The reality, however, really depends on how you look at it and react to this situation.
Like any challenge in life it’s not what actually happens that will determine the outcome it’s what you decide to do about it.

Walking
I live about a half-mile from two gas stations, two miles from Walmart and less than two miles from the mall. These businesses are well within walking distance, but I don’t walk to any of them—I drive. This may seem surprising, but many Americans practice the same habit.
According to the 2010 "National Bicycle and Walking Study" by the U. S. Department of Transportation, 72 percent of trips that are less than three miles in length are made by vehicle. Short distances can be easily traversed by foot rather than by car but only a quarter of Americans are choosing walking or biking as their means of transportation.
A December 2012 study by Gregg L. Furie published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, says that about 25 percent of Americans participate in active transportation. Active transportation is defined as human-powered transportation, such as walking or biking. The results of the study showed that those who participated in active transportation had a lower BMI lower waist circumference, and lower odds of developing hypertension and diabetes.
The "Vital Signs Walking Among Adults" study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages adults to get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. However, about half of all adults do not get the recommended amount of exercise, and about one-third reported no physical activity at all The study also showed that walkers were three times more likely to meet the recommended amount of exercise than non-walkers.
In addition to the health benefits associated with active transportation, there are many less obvious benefits as well. The American Automobile Association’s(AAA) annual "Your Driving Costs" study for 2012 revealed that the average annual cost for owning and operating a sedan is $ 8,946. Compared with essentially cost-free foot travel or the $120 annual cost of owning a bicycle, choosing active trans portation saves you money.
Walking is an easily accessible activity that can be done anywhere anytime with anyone. By implementing walking as a primary form of commuting, people can increase their healt and decrease their spending. Participating in human-powered transportation also removes some of the stresses of driving from people’s lives. By walking, people can avoid traffic congestion, stop signs, and road rage. Realistically, walking to work could not only be more beneficial, but also more practical than driving.
So, put down the car keys, lace up your walking shoes and prepare yourself for a commute that few choose to experience--walking.

Moderate Earthquake Strikes England
A moderate earthquake struck parts of southeast England on 28 April 2007, toppling chimneys from houses and rousing residents from their beds. Several thousand people were left without power in Kent County. One woman suffered minor head and neck injuries.
"It felt as if the whole house was being slid across like a fun-fair ride," said the woman.
The British Geological Survey said the 4. 3-magnitude quake struck at 8.. 19 a. m. and was centered under the English Channel, about 8.5 miles south of Dover and near the entrance to the Channel Tunnel.
Witnesses said cracks appeared in walls and chimneys collapsed across the county. Residents said the tremor had lasted for about 10 to 15 seconds.
"I was lying in bed and it felt as if someone had just got up from bed next to me. "said Hendrick van Eek,27, of Canterbury about 60 miles southeast of London. "I then heard the sound of cracking, and it was getting heavier and heavier. It felt as if someone was at the end of my bed hopping up and down. "
There are thousands of moderate quakes on this scale around the world each year, but they are rare in Britain. The April 28 quake was the strongest in Britain since 2002 when a 4. 8-magnitude quake struck the central England city of Birmingham.
The country’s strongest earthquake took place in the North Sea in 1931 ,measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale. British Geological Survey scientist Roger Musson said the quake took place on 28 April in an area that had seen several of the biggest earthquakes ever to strike Britain, including one in 1580 that caused damage in London and was felt in France. Musson predicted that it was only a matter of time before another earthquake struck this part of England. However, people should not be scared too much by this prediction, Musson said,as the modern earthquake warning system of Britain should be able to detect a forthcoming quake and announce it several hours be- fore it takes place. This would allow time for people to evacuate and reduce damage to the minimum.

Coming Soon to a Theater Near You!
What are special effects? Do you enjoy movies that use a lot of speciai effects Dinosaurs from the distant past! Space battles from the distant future! There has been a revolution in special effects, and it has transformed the movies we see.
The revolution began in the mid 1970s with George Lucas’s Star Wars ,a film that stunned audiences. That revolution continues to the present, with dramatic changes in special-effects technology. The company behind these changes is Lucas’s Industrial Light&- Magic(ILM). And the man behind the company is Dennis Muren, who has worked with Lucas since Star Wars.
Muren’s interest in special effects began very early. At the age of6,he was photographing toy dinosaurs and spaceships. At 10, he had an 8 millimeter movie camera and was making these things move through stop-motion. (Stop-motion is a process in which objects are shot with a camera, moved slightly, shot again, and so on. When the shots are put together, the objects appear to move)
Talk to Muren and you’ll understand what ILM is all about:tak-ing on new challenges. B 1989,Muren decided he had pushed the old technology as far as it would go.
He saw computer graphics(图像)(CG) technology as the wave of the future and took a year off to master it.
With CG technology, images can be scanned into a computer for processing, for example, and many separate shots can be combined in- to a single image. CG technology has now reached the point, Muren says, where special effects can be used to do just about anything so that movies can tell stories better than ever before. The First Settlement in North America
It is very difficult to say just when colonization began. The first hundred years after Christopher Columbus’s journey of discovery in 1492 did not produce any settlement on the North America continent but rather some Spanish trading posts further south, a great interest in gold and adventure and some colorful crimes in which the English had their part. John Cabot, originally from Genoa but a citizen of Venice was established as a trader in Bristol, England, when he made a journey in 1497. But his ship, the Matthew, with its crew of eighteen, did no more than see an island(probably off the New England coast) and return home. He and his son made further voyages across the north Atlantic which enabled the English crown to claim a "legal" title to North America. But for a long time afterwards the Europeans’ interest in America was mainly corffined to the Spanish activities further south.
The first beginning of permanent settlement in North America were nearly a hundred years after Columbus’s first voyage. The Englishman Sir Walter Raleigh claimed the whole of North America for England calling it Virginia. In 1585 he sent a small group of people who landed in Roanoke Island, but they stayed only for a year and then went back to England with another expedition led by Drake in 1587. A second group who landed in 1587 had all disappeared when a further expedition arrived in 1590.
The first permanent settlement in North America was in 1607. English capitalists founded two Virginia companies, a southern one based in London and a northern one based in Bristol. It was decided to give the name New England to the northern area. The first settlers in Virginia were little more than wage slaves to the company. All were men and the experiment was not very successful. Many died. Those who survived lived in miserable conditions. By 1619 the colony had only a thousand people.
